L&rsquo;abb\u00e9 Barth\u00e9l\u00e9my d&rsquo;Andlau modernise le Hugstein au cours du 15e s. en lui adjoignant notamment une tour-porte orn\u00e9e d&rsquo;une frise et dot\u00e9e d&rsquo;un pont-levis. Deux nouvelles tours sont \u00e9galement ajout\u00e9es au syst\u00e8me d\u00e9fensif du ch\u00e2teau bien que son r\u00f4le principal soit r\u00e9sidentiel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\">En 1598, le ch\u00e2teau est frapp\u00e9 par la foudre. Il servira au d\u00e9but du 17e s. de prison, particuli\u00e8rement pour les luth\u00e9riens ou \u00a0les sorci\u00e8res. Abandonn\u00e9 par la suite, il sert encore de refuge avant d&rsquo;\u00eatre utilis\u00e9 comme carri\u00e8re de pierres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\">La pierre dont est construit le ch\u00e2teau fut extraite du foss\u00e9 qui l&rsquo;entoure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\">Le donjon cylindrique de 10 m\u00e8tres de diam\u00e8tre, dont la partie haute a disparu, est relativement rare en Alsace. Le logis principal devait comporter deux voire trois \u00e9tages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\">Outre le donjon, l&rsquo;ensemble d\u00e9fensif est constitu\u00e9 d&rsquo;un rempart arrondi aux angles, un leurre pour donner l&rsquo;impression \u00e0 l&rsquo;assaillant que le ch\u00e2teau \u00e9tait \u00e9quip\u00e9 de tours cylindriques.
